Hotels in Château-d'Oex

Château-d'Oex is the main village of the Pays-d'Enhaut, on the GoldenPass line west of Rougemont, known for its balloon festival each January (23 to 31 January 2027). Guests get the Pass d'Enhaut, which covers local trains and buses, including the bus to Col des Mosses. Glacier 3000 is about 35 minutes by car. This page also covers Rossinière, a quiet village of carved chalets just to the west, home to Balthus' Grand Chalet and without a ski lift.

Before you go to Château-d'Oex

Getting there

Château-d'Oex station is on the GoldenPass line, about 17 to 23 minutes from Gstaad depending on the train; GoldenPass Express trains stop here as well as regional ones. Rossinière is the next stop west, about 11 minutes further on. TPC buses run from Château-d'Oex up to Col des Mosses. For Glacier 3000 without a car, take the train to Gstaad and PostBus 180 from there.

Skiing

La Braye, the village's own area reached by cable car and chairlift, is the subject of a relaunch project, so check that its lifts are running before relying on them. The Pays-d'Enhaut tourist office names two alpine areas: La Videmanette from Rougemont, one stop away, and Les Mosses and La Lécherette, on the bus to Col des Mosses. Cross-country loops run along the Sarine, at L'Etivaz and on Pra Cornet. Rossinière has no ski lift.

Guest card and tax

Hotels in Château-d'Oex and Rossinière give the Pass d'Enhaut from the first night, not the Gstaad Card. It is valid until 5 am after departure. In winter it covers the MOB train between La Tine and Zweisimmen, the bus to Col des Mosses and PostBuses from Gstaad, with reduced entry to Espace Ballon. A visitor's tax is charged per night.

Visitor's tax: CHF 3.00 per adult per night, at hotels of one to three stars, and CHF 6.50 at four and five stars; Rossinière, a separate municipality, charges the same. Under 16 staying with their parents free. Source

Is there skiing in Château-d'Oex?

Check before you book. The village's La Braye lifts are part of a relaunch project, and the tourist office lists La Videmanette at Rougemont and Les Mosses and La Lécherette as the alpine areas. Both are free to reach with the Pass d'Enhaut, Rougemont by train and Col des Mosses by bus.

How do you get from Gstaad to Château-d'Oex?

By GoldenPass train, about 17 to 23 minutes through Saanen and Rougemont. The Gstaad Card covers the line only as far as Rougemont, so visitors staying in the Saanenland need a ticket for the last stretch, while Château-d'Oex guests ride free with the Pass d'Enhaut.

What is Rossinière like as a base?

Small and quiet: a village of carved chalets one stop west of Château-d'Oex on the GoldenPass line. It has no ski lift, so skiing means the train to Rougemont or the bus from Château-d'Oex to Col des Mosses. Hotel guests get the Pass d'Enhaut.
