Hotels in Lauenen

Lauenen is a quiet village in its own side valley, about 10 minutes by car or 15 minutes by PostBus from Gstaad. The far end of the village lies at about 1,252 m, on the edge of the Rohr nature reserve, and Lake Lauenen is about an hour's walk from there. Skiing at home is a small T-bar with three pistes; the main ski areas are in Gstaad. An 8 km cross-country trail runs through the valley. Glacier 3000 is about 27 to 29 minutes by car.

Before you go to Lauenen

Getting there

Lauenen has no railway. PostBus 181 runs from Gstaad station to Lauenen Rohrbrücke in about 17 minutes, several times a day, and in summer continues to Lake Lauenen; it is free with the Gstaad Card. Trains arrive at Gstaad on the GoldenPass line. For Glacier 3000 by public transport, change in Gstaad to PostBus 180 and allow 73 to 94 minutes in all, so a car is the quicker way there.

Skiing

Skiing in Lauenen itself is the village T-bar. For bigger days, the Wispile, Eggli and Wasserngrat lifts are reached through Gstaad. Cross-country is the village's strength: classic and skating trails run from Lauenen through the Rohr towards Oey, and a marked winter walk of about 8.5 km goes to Lake Lauenen and back. A snowshoe trail crosses the Chrinen Pass to Gsteig.

Guest card and tax

Hotel guests in Lauenen get the Gstaad Card from the first night, with the Saani Card for children 6 to 12. It covers PostBus 181 to Gstaad and the trains and buses beyond, including line 180 to Glacier 3000. A storytelling carriage ride in Lauenen is bookable with the card. A visitor's tax is charged per night.

Visitor's tax: CHF 5.80 per adult per night, plus a Canton of Bern lodging tax of CHF 1.00 per night. Ages 6 to 12 pay half; under 6 free. Source

Staying in Lauenen

Is Lauenen a good base for skiing?

For cross-country skiing and winter walks, yes. For downhill skiing it is less direct: the village has one small T-bar, so most ski days start with the PostBus or a short drive to the Gstaad lifts. Glacier 3000 is much quicker by car than by bus.

How do you get from Gstaad to Lauenen?

PostBus 181 leaves Gstaad station several times a day and takes about 17 minutes to Lauenen Rohrbrücke, free with the Gstaad Card. By car the valley road takes about 10 minutes. In summer the bus continues to Lake Lauenen.
