On our lists

Le Grand Chalet sits on a hill at about 1,100 m, roughly a kilometre from Gstaad station, looking out over the whole village. It has 20 rooms and 3 apartments, and the same pair has run it since 2008: director Pedro Ferreira, who looks after the wine, and chef Steve Willié.

Dinner is the point. La Bagatelle, classic French and Mediterranean market cooking with a panoramic terrace, holds 16 points in Gault&Millau 2027, and the cellar holds more than 900 wines. There is a small outdoor pool heated to 24 °C and a compact wellness room with sauna and hammam that you reserve for yourself. The deluxe rooms, junior suite and apartments take two adults and two children. An on-call shuttle runs to the village; walking back up is a climb. It suits couples who care about food and wine and prefer quiet to nightlife.
